The Problem

SharePoint doesn't show breadcrumbs. Users click into a sub-site, follow a link into a document library, open a policy page - and have no idea where they are in the intranet structure. The back button works but it's a one-step memory; two clicks deep and people are lost. Every intranet of any size has the same problem.

Questions About Breadcrumb

How is Breadcrumb deployed?

It's installed at the tenant level and runs as an application customiser. Once deployed, it appears on every modern SharePoint page automatically - no need to add it to each page or site. Rolling it out to a 10,000-user intranet takes one deployment, not ten thousand page edits.

Can we hide it on specific sites or pages?

Yes. Exclusion rules can be defined by site URL, page, or site template. Common exclusions: the homepage hero, executive microsites, modern pages with bespoke hero layouts where a breadcrumb would clash. Set the rules once in the tenant-level configuration.

Does it work on all page types?

Works on modern SharePoint pages, news posts and site pages across communication sites, team sites and hub sites. Classic pages are not supported - SharePoint Framework application customisers only target the modern experience.

How does it know the site hierarchy?

It uses the hub site association and site URL structure SharePoint already has. If your sites are associated with a hub (which most well-structured intranets have), Breadcrumb builds the trail from Hub › Site › Page. No separate sitemap to maintain.

Can we customise the separator and styling?

Yes - separator character, colours, font size and spacing are configurable at tenant level. The breadcrumb inherits your site theme by default, and you can override specific visual elements centrally so every site looks consistent.

Does it work in Microsoft Teams?

Yes. When a SharePoint page is embedded as a tab in Teams, the breadcrumb renders correctly and links behave the same way. Mobile Teams too.
