Modern Search Bar

A branded, beautifully styled search bar that feeds the same SharePoint and Microsoft 365 results as the built-in search - but through an interface you control. Drop it in a hero banner, a sidebar, or anywhere your intranet needs it. The design, placement and styling the default search box doesn't give you.

The Problem

SharePoint's default search box is plain, small and tucked into the suite bar. It doesn't match your brand, you can't resize it, you can't drop it into a hero banner, and your users often don't notice it's there. The intranet looks polished everywhere else - then falls back to generic Microsoft chrome for the thing people do most.

The Solution

Modern Search Bar gives you a fully styleable search entry point that passes queries to the same SharePoint and Microsoft 365 results page. Same results, better presentation. Place it in a hero banner, a sidebar, a page header - wherever your design calls for it. Width, height, radius, colours, placeholder, icon - all configurable per placement.

Same Results, Better Interface

Modern Search Bar vs Default SharePoint Search

Both feed the same SharePoint and Microsoft 365 search results. Only the entry experience changes.

SharePoint Default

  • Fixed position in the suite bar
  • Small, easy to miss
  • No style controls
  • Doesn't match brand
  • Same on every page

Modern Search Bar

  • Place it anywhere on the page
  • Any size, from compact to hero-wide
  • Full colour, radius and border control
  • Matches your brand system
  • Different styling per page if needed

Place It Where It Matters

Three Common Placements

Modern Search Bar drops into any web part zone. These are the placements customers use most.

Hero Banner

Prominent, wide, obvious. Makes search the first thing people see when they land on the homepage.

Sidebar

Compact, persistent. Good for sub-sites where search is always needed but shouldn't dominate.

Page Header

Directly below the site navigation. Keeps search within easy reach on every page without taking hero real estate.

What You Get

SharePoint search power, presented on your terms.

Full Design Control

Width, height, border radius, colours, placeholder text, icon styling - all configurable through the property pane. Match your brand system exactly.

SharePoint + Microsoft 365 Search

Queries pass straight to the SharePoint search results page. Users get the full results you've already configured, including permissions, verticals and filters - just through a better entry point.

Flexible Placement

Drop into hero sections, sidebars, page headers or any web part zone. Different placements can have different styling - a prominent hero bar on the homepage, a subtle sidebar on sub-sites.

Theme-Aware Defaults

Inherits your SharePoint site theme as a starting point. Override anything you need to, or leave it alone for consistent out-of-the-box styling.

Responsive by Default

Scales from a wide desktop search bar to a compact mobile input. Touch-friendly on any device without extra configuration.

Works in Teams Tabs

Renders correctly when your SharePoint page is embedded in Microsoft Teams. Search behaviour stays consistent across desktop browser, mobile browser and Teams.

Questions About Modern Search Bar

Does this replace SharePoint's built-in search?

No - it sits alongside it. The built-in suite-bar search still works. Modern Search Bar gives you an additional, customisable entry point that feeds the same results page. Users can use whichever they prefer, but in practice, a well-placed branded search bar gets far more usage than the default one most people don't notice.

Do we get the same results as the default search?

Yes, exactly the same. The query is passed straight through to your SharePoint search results page. Search permissions, verticals, promoted results, refiners and any Microsoft Search configuration your tenant already has all apply. Modern Search Bar is the entry interface only - the results engine is Microsoft's.

Can different pages have different-looking search bars?

Yes. Each instance is configured independently through the property pane. A wide pill-shaped bar in the homepage hero, a compact rectangle in the sidebar of the HR hub, a minimal bar in the page header of the policies site - same web part, different styling.

Can we point search at a specific scope?

The search bar uses your tenant's configured search experience by default. If you need scope-specific searches (e.g. search only within the HR site, or search a specific vertical), that's configured at the SharePoint search level and Modern Search Bar respects it. We can help scope a tailored search experience as part of a retained support engagement.

What about autocomplete or type-ahead suggestions?

The current release focuses on the entry bar itself - queries submit on enter and land on the full SharePoint results page. Microsoft Search provides suggestions on its own results page. If inline type-ahead in the bar is important for you, mention it on the demo - customers who need it can usually get there with a retained support engagement.

Does it work in Microsoft Teams?

Yes. When a SharePoint page is embedded as a tab in Teams, Modern Search Bar renders correctly and queries route the same way. Works on mobile Teams too.
